Course Offerings

The following courses will be offered in 2025. Please refer to the syllabus for details. (1 class = 90 minutes)

For beginners. Minimal Japanese that can be used in daily life starting from that day. No prior knowledge of the writing system is required.
Note: P1 and P2 cover the same content (offered at different times and dates).

P2 Survival Japanese for Beginners (B) 5 Classes/1 Week From June 30 (Mon) to July 4 (Fri) 15:00-16:30 0.5
P3 Elementary Japanese for Daily Use 10 Classes/3 Weeks From June 9 (Mon) to June 27 (Fri), 15:00-16:30 1

For those at a lower elementary level (but not complete beginners). The goal is to use the Japanese learned so far more productively in everyday situations. Basic ability to read hiragana is required.

P4 Intermediate Japanese for Daily Use 10 Classes/3 Weeks From July 7(Mon) to July 25(Fri), 15:00-16:30 1

For those who have completed elementary-level Japanese studies. The aim is to use the Japanese learned so far more naturally in everyday situations. A basic understanding of grammar equivalent to N4 level is required.

Notes:
  1. Global Units will be issued to course completers. While they are different from regular credits offered by faculties or graduate schools, a certificate with grades will still be issued by the Center for Global Education, scheduled for issuance in September 2025. Details about Global Units can be found in FAQ (Pre-arrival JLP).
  2. During the course period, there will be scheduled opportunities for online interaction both among participants of the Pre-JLP and between participants and current UTokyo students.

Eligibility

Those who have received official authorization (such as an acceptance letter or admission certificate) signed by the Dean for admission to UTokyo at the time of application.

The specific enrollment status at UTokyo after admission:
Undergraduate Student, Graduate Student (Master’s Program), Graduate Student (Doctoral Program), Undergraduate Research Student, Graduate Research Student, Graduate International Research Student, Special Research Student, Special Auditor, or Research Student-Institute.

Note:
Please refer to the syllabus of each course for the Japanese language level required for enrolling in these Japanese courses. Some materials and verbal explanations in the elementary classes will be provided in English.

Fees

Enrollees are charged an application fee and program fees. The procedures and timing of those payments are different.

Application Fee: JPY 5,000

Note:The application fee must be paid by credit card ONLY during the application period and is strictly non-refundable.
Available brands of the credit card depend on the option you choose within Flywire, which handles the payment procedure via the online application system, as well as your location. Depending on the payment option you choose within Flywire, a handling charge may apply. Such a charge must be borne by the applicant.
We strongly recommend applying well in advance to allow sufficient time.

Note: The program fee must be paid by credit card ONLY after you have received notification in late May of your course placement following the online placement interview.
Available brands of the credit card depend on the option you choose within Flywire, which handles the payment procedure via the online application system, as well as your location. Depending on the payment option you choose within Flywire, a handling charge may apply. Such a charge must be borne by the applicant.

Enrollment Process

A total of four steps are required from application to enrollment confirmation.

【Step1】

Application for Enrollment and Payment of Application Fee

You must do 1 through 4 below to complete the application submission process. If any step is not completed by the deadline, the application will not be accepted.

  1. Create an account in the online application system (TAO).
  2. Refer to the syllabus and schedule to select the desired course.
  3. Submit the following digital documents and enter the required information (including questions about your Japanese language learning history and a conflict check regarding the interview time) in TAO.
    • Copy of passport (PDF): Pages displaying the applicant’s name and face photo are required.
    • Color ID photo (JPEG): Sized 45mm x 35mm, plain background, taken within the last 3 months.
    • Document indicating that admission to UTokyo has been approved by the Dean.
  4. Pay the application fee.

Note: Before applying through TAO, please read “Regarding the Application” below carefully.

【Step2】

Taking the Online Interview

Those who have completed all of Step 1 above will receive an email with the interview time and Zoom URL.
A brief oral test will be conducted to determine the appropriate course (approximately 5-10 minutes per person).

Note: If it is determined that there is no suitable course for you based on the test results, enrollment may be declined.

Notification of Interview Date and Time: Around May 12 (Mon)

Placement Interview: Designated date and time on May 15 (Thu) or 16 (Fri)

【Step3】

Confirmation of Course Placement and Payment of Course Fee

You will be informed of your course placement via email.
Please make the payment for the course fee after confirming your placement.

Note: If payment is not received by the deadline, you will be considered to have withdrawn from the course.

Notification of Course Placement: Around May 19 (Mon)

Payment Deadline: 16:00 May 26 (Mon)

【Step4】

Enrollment Confirmation

Your enrollment will be confirmed upon completion of the payment verification.
You will receive formal registration information from the Center for Japanese Language Education’s student management system (STAR), so please access it.
From then on, information about the course and Zoom URL for classes will be sent through the STAR system.

Regarding the Application

Please review the following carefully before proceeding with Step 1 of the enrollment process:

  1. This program is conducted as one of the UTokyo GUC programs, following the rules outlined below. Please read them carefully before applying.

    When you access this link, you will be prompted to log in or register an account. If you do not have an account, click “account registration” to create one. You can apply for this program only by logging into this account and accessing the link above.

    Note:

    • When you click "Start my application," your Application ID will be displayed. After confirming it, you can click on the "Application" tab in the menu to begin the procedure.
    • This program is exclusively for Japanese language education. It is distinct from the UTokyo GUC Summer Program offered by the Global Education Center for students enrolled in overseas universities. This program is not listed on the UTokyo page linked from the TAO home page; it can be accessed only via the above link. Please be careful to avoid any confusion.
  3. Please be aware that the screening process for all applications will begin only after the application deadline based on the information provided via TAO. It is normal for the status on TAO to continue displaying “Application completed” during this period.
  4. The deadline for the application is 8:00 Japan Standard Time on Wednesday, May 7. For the following reasons, we strongly recommend applying well in advance to allow sufficient time:
    • After the application deadline, the online application system (TAO) will automatically close, and late submissions cannot be accepted under any circumstances.
    • The Office may not respond to inquiries promptly.
    • The Office will not be responsible for any consequences resulting from applicants’ failure to receive, read, and/or reply to messages sent from our office, as well as any malfunctions of networks, PCs, or other devices that may prevent applicants from submitting applications in time.
  5. Please be aware that after submitting your application, no further changes can be made for any reason, and the application fee, once paid, will not be refunded. We strongly recommend that you review your application thoroughly, with special attention to the course you have applied for.
