Short-term Japanese Course

Offering elementary to advanced one-two week lessons, this course is aimed at students who are not able to attend classes regularly or who arrive in the middle of a semester.

International students and foreign researchers who are currently affiliated with the University of Tokyo are eligible to take the courses.

Since this is a one-two week limited course, it goes without saying that it does not cover all the content of each level. However, every level focuses on immediately applicable Japanese. It can also be an opportunity for those who usually self-study to challenge their practical skills and enjoy classroom learning.

The offered classes and schedules vary depending on the semester. Please check the latest course information on the Course Calendar.

Please check the Course Level Guide for the minimum level required to take the course.

This course is designed for students who have learned approximately 80% of the material taught in a general beginner’s level course but have not yet completed it. During the course, students will learn grammatical items as such as causative forms and polite speech (keego) through conversational practice and text reading. For those who have completed Grammar Index A & B, the original materials used in the latter part of the beginner’s course at the Center, this course offers an opportunity to learn content not covered in that course (Grammar Index C) and complete the beginner’s level.

For those who have completed the beginner’s level through methods other than the Center’s, this course serves as an excellent level for reviewing and reinforcing their previously learned Japanese language skills.

[Short] Level 3 Further Steps

The target learners are students who have generally mastered the content of the beginner level (equivalent to commercially available textbooks such as 'Minna no Nihongo 1,&2,' 'Daichi 1&2,' or 'Genki 1& 2'). The course involves reviewing what was learned at the beginner level, watching videos, providing detailed explanations about objects, and increasing the ability to express oneself in their own words.

[Content]

Goals of each lesson:

  • Explain the functions and advantages of items
  • Watch Japanese CM
  • Create a talk show, etc.
[Short] Level 4 Further Steps

The target learners are students who are at the upper-intermediate level. The course involves reviewing what was learned up to the intermediate level, while watching videos and providing detailed explanations about objects. Additionally, it aims to expand the ability to express oneself in their own words. Furthermore, through practicing situations where opinions are expressed or agreements are made while considering the listener, the course also explores ways to continue conversations comfortably.

[Content]

Goals of each lesson:

  • Continue the conversation more comfortably.
  • Watch Japanese CM
  • Create a talk show, etc.
[Short] Level 5 Further Steps

The target learners are students who are at the advanced level. Focusing on Japanese language 'request' scenarios, the course uses videos of actual conversational situations and experiences of international students. It observes and discusses the preferences of native Japanese speakers, how they prefer to express themselves, how they develop topics, and the underlying thoughts in various conversational contexts. Through these learning activities, the goal is to understand the characteristics of consideration towards the listener in Japanese and apply them to one's own practical use of the language.

Goals of each lesson:

  • Start / Conclude a conversation
  • Make a request
  • Explain reasons, etc.
