About Japanese Language Education Division, Center for Global Education
In April 2023, Center for Global Education was established as a university-wide platform for international education of the University of Tokyo, and the existing Center for Japanese Language Education became its Japanese Language Education Division.
Although English communication on campus and advanced tools like AI and language learning apps are becoming more common, the persistent desire to use Japanese, comprehend it deeply, and gain insights into Japanese people, culture, and society remains unchanging.
In response to this desire, our Center offers a variety of Japanese language courses catering to different levels and learning durations. For the convenience of students and researchers on various campuses, all classes are conducted online.
Our Center is also an appealing place where students from various countries and regions around the world can gather to learn Japanese as a second language. Amidst your busy academic life, why not take the opportunity to learn Japanese together in class?
Philosophy
Unlock the World through Japanese Learning!
Our Center’s goal is to provide an intellectually enjoyable experience that expands individuals’ world through Japanese language learning. In our classroom, learners have the opportunity to explore various aspects of the language, including word usage, basic sentence structures, the principles of Japanese communication, understanding the true intentions behind others’ speech and the potential meanings of one’s own speech, and the intercultural elements that influence relationships with Japanese native speakers, all while actually using Japanese.
To achieve this goal, we offer opportunities to immerse oneself naturally in Japanese language learning right from the first day of the beginner level. Recognizing the challenges that come with adult language learning, as opposed to the natural acquisition of a mother tongue in childhood, we provide effective support throughout the learning process.
Our courses mainly focus on oral communication from beginner to advanced levels, but, considering the unique nature of the Japanese writing system, we also provide specialized content for learning kanji and written Japanese. We encourage you to fully engage your mind and enjoy interactive experiences with classmates and teachers, embracing the intellectual pleasure that comes from Japanese language learning.
