About Japanese Language Education Division, Center for Global Education
In April 2023, Center for Global Education was established as a university-wide platform for international education of the University of Tokyo, and the existing Center for Japanese Language Education became its Japanese Language Education Division.
Although English communication on campus and advanced tools like AI and language learning apps are becoming more common, international members of UTokyo continue to seek opportunities to practice Japanese, understand the language on a deeper level, and gain insights into Japanese people, culture, and society.
To address these needs, we offer a variety of language courses of various durations catering to different levels. All classes are conducted online to maximize access for students and researchers on various campuses.
We are also a meeting ground for students from various countries and regions who study Japanese as a foreign language. Join us and make Japanese language study a part of your scholarly life at UTokyo!

Discover the World through Japanese Learning
We aim to provide an intellectually enjoyable experience that broadens your perspective through Japanese language learning. In our classes, students explore various aspects of the language, including vocabulary, basic sentence structures, communication principles, understanding the intentions behind others’ speech, interpreting the potential meanings of one’s own speech, and intercultural elements that influence interactions with Japanese speakers—all while actively using Japanese.
To meet the needs of adult learners, we provide guidance and support to make language learning effective and engaging from the very first day of the beginner level.
Our courses mainly focus on oral communication, from beginner to advanced levels. At the same time, recognizing the unique nature of the Japanese writing system, we also provide specialized content for learning kanji and written Japanese. Students who are interested can participate in interactive learning with teachers and classmates and explore Japanese in a way that fits their academic life at UTokyo.
