Global Leadership Program-I
Global Leadership Program-I (GLP-I))
The University of Tokyo Global Leadership Program will empower new generations of global leaders, through a diversity of interconnected learning experiences, to make a positive impact on society.The GLP-I is a university-wide program for all undergraduate students interested in developing leadership skills and global careers. The program emphasizes the importance of diversity, inclusion, and the transdisciplinary, solution-oriented approaches needed to address global issues in the 21st century.
Program Structure
The Global Leadership Program-I (GLP-I) requires you to take six components:- Global Leadership Course (GLC-I: Leadership Foundation)
- A combination of two elective components of your choice
- Global Capstone
- Global Experience of your choice
- Global Leadership Summit
Enrollment and Recognition of Each Component
Enrollment
There is no designated period for applying to participate in GLP-I. You can complete the GLP-I by registering for and completing each component.Most courses can be taken in the senior division and in the final semester of the junior division. First-year students and second-year students (who are not in their fourth semester) cannot take any components, besides Global Experiences.
Though most courses and components can be taken in any order, we recommend that you begin by taking the "Global Leadership Course (GLC-I: Leadership Foundation)", which is one of the mandatory components. The link to the registration form can be found via the syllabus on UTAS before the beginning of each semester.
Recognition of Each Component
Any components that you have already taken, such as GLA or GUC, can be registered after you have completed the “Global Leadership Course (GLC-I: Leadership Foundation)”. The form will be available for students after enrolling in GLC-I.Global Experiences and Scholarships
There are up to two opportunities to access scholarships for global experiences based on the completion of GLP-I components. Please refer to the link below to see the Global Experiences and Scholarships webpage.

Global Leadership Course (GLC-I): Foundations of Leadership ![]() |
The Foundations of Leadership course introduces you to the fundamental competencies needed for empathic global leadership and effective collaboration in diverse teams. Developed in collaboration with Minerva Project, all Global Leadership Courses are offered online using Forum, the online platform pioneered by Minerva University. | You need to enroll via Microsoft Forms before the deadline written in the syllabus on UTAS (usually at least 7-10 days before the first class) and complete registration through UTAS based on the schedule designated by your faculty, college, center, or school. The form can be found in the syllabus on UTAS which will be available approximately one month before the start of each semester. |
Global Capstone | The Global Capstone is a student-led project that spans one semester. You will apply principles of leadership, teamwork, inclusivity, and diversity to an academic investigation related to the SDGs; and plan your Global Experience. Participating students will benefit from mentoring by GLP-I faculty members, both in-person (3 sessions planned) and online (2 sessions planned), and will have the chance to learn from other participating students. Specifically, students will work on the following activities: (1) Academic Investigation related to SDGs (2) Planning of Global Experiences (3) Creation of a Global Leadership Portfolio Completing the Capstone unlocks the GLP-I Scholarship (I) for Global Experiences. |
The Capstone is open to students who have passed the GLC-I. |
Global Leadership Summit | The Global Leadership Summit is the culmination of your studies through the Global Leadership Program-I. It is conducted twice a year in May and October, and brings together all members of the GLP community, including students, alumni, mentors, faculty, staff, sponsor partners, and other allies to showcase Capstone Projects and to celebrate your success. The Summit is your opportunity to showcase what you have learned about global issues and SDGs, how you learned through your global experience(s), and to make a statement on your vision for global leadership. | The Summit is open to students who have passed the Global Capstone. |
Global Experiences |
Students will select or design their own Global Experiences. Most students will plan their Global Experience through their Capstone project.

In addition to the core curriculum (mandatory components), you must take one course from two of the following categories:Most of these courses are 2 credits. You need 2 credits (in the case of GUC, 2 global units) from each of two categories.

Global Leadership Courses (GLC-II) ![]() |
There are three Global Leadership Courses (GLC-II). Most students will take one GLC-II course to complete the GLP-I. You will also earn graduations credits in most faculties. Complex Systems: Introduces concepts related to systems thinking and complexity theory. Assignments explore various dynamic systems, from social to economic.Currently offered each S semester. Logic and Persuasion: Emphasizes key aspects of logical reasoning, bias management, and ethics. Assignments focus on promoting social behavioral change. Currently offered each A semester. Innovative Problem-Solving: Provides a systematic framework for creative problem-solving and rational decision-making. Assignments center on devising practical solutions to complex challenges. Currently offered each A semester. |

Global Liberal Arts Courses (GLA) |
Interdisciplinary courses focus on issues related to the SDGs. GLA covers some of the most imminent topics in today’s world, including gender, diversity, science, health, migration, poverty, AI and GX. Details are available on the GLA website. |
You must register through UTAS. Registration schedule is based on the rules of the faculty, college, center, or school you belong to. |
UTokyo Global Unit Courses (GUC) |
UTokyo Global Unit Courses offer a variety of in-person and online courses with cutting-edge contents, taught by leading faculty members of the University of Tokyo. Study alongside both UTokyo students and those visiting UTokyo from outside. Details are available on the GUC website. |
