Long-term study abroad is not the only way to open your door to the world.

Go Global Gateway (GGG) is a program designed for all undergraduate students to develop their “global competence” (the ability to live and work together with diverse people around the world) through a variety of opportunities tailored to your interests. From foreign language courses taken on campus to short-term study abroad programs, every step is a valuable experience that connects you to the world.

Your journey begins with the 100-minute On-demand Online Course.

By simply adding a global perspective to your daily studies, your activities will be recognized as “global competence.” Take the first step now and turn your experiences into an official university certificate!

The Certification Process

GGG certificate will be awarded upon satisfying the requirements ①, ② and ③ and/or ④ listed below, and submitting the designated form. Click on ① to ④ below for more details.

Application Form for the GGG Certificate

The application is only available to undergraduate students. Please note that graduate students are not eligible to apply.
When applying for the certificate after completing "④ Global Experiences," you will need to upload a document verifying your participation in the relevant program or activity (e.g., completion certificate, program report) within the form. Make sure to prepare this in advance.
Once your application has been reviewed by the GlobE office, a notification will be sent to your ECCS Cloud Email address.

*It may take up to one month to issue the certificate.

GGG+ Certification

By completing the Global Leadership Program (GLP) offered by GlobE, along with the ① On-demand Online Course, you will qualify for GGG+ (Plus). Students who successfully complete the GLP program will be issued a digital certificate (in Open Badge format) as proof of their active engagement in the international education program.

① On-demand Online Course

― Step into Global Competence in 100 Minutes! ―

As the first step in engaging in international activities at UTokyo, start with the On-demand Online Course. This course provides comprehensive information on various opportunities for international activities and programs offered by UTokyo. You can also hear stories from current UTokyo students and GlobE faculties about their global experiences.

Completion of the course is mandatory for applying to and participating in various activities at UTokyo, such as GO GLOBAL Study Abroad Fairs, University-wide Student Exchange Program (USTEP), and short-term study abroad programs, etc. We encourage you to take the course as early as possible.

Course Description

The course consists of the following four themes. For each theme, there are one or two videos and several quizzes (multiple-choice questions) to assess your understanding.

After submitting your answers, click "View Results" on the screen and review your responses.
Save the notification which will be sent to your ECCS Cloud Email address upon your completion of the course. (The notification will be sent separately from the automatic email sent from the form.)

② Foreign Language Courses

Earn all the credits for foreign language courses (Foundation and Integrated Courses (Group L)) required by the Junior Division at UTokyo. For details, also refer to the Academic Handbook.

Note: Foreign language courses offered to undergraduate students in the Senior Division that are conducted in a language other than your first language are counted as Category ③.

③ Courses offered in languages other than your first language

Complete at least one course taught in a language other than your first language. This includes the courses offered by the Center for Global Education (GlobE) listed below. The relevant courses offered by individual faculties, which are not listed here, are also eligible.
Note: Foundation Courses and Integrated Courses (Group L) offered in the Junior Division, which are categorized as ②, are not eligible for Category ③.

Global Liberal Arts Courses (GLA):
GLA explore interdisciplinary topics, particularly those related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), seven different languages, including English. Classes are principally conducted with a small number of approximately 20 students, focusing on interactive activities such as discussions.
Language-Global Liberal Arts Courses (L-GLA):
L-GLA provide students with the opportunity to develop advanced proficiency in English, German, French, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, and Korean through small, interactive classes.
Global Leadership Program Courses (GLC):
In the GLC, students develop the teamwork skills and fundamental competencies needed for effective collaboration in diverse team to make a positive impact on society, based on practical knowledge.

UTokyo Global Unit Courses (GUC)：
The University of Tokyo Global Unit Courses provides a great opportunity for students around the world to experience studying at one of the world's foremost universities in East Asia. UTokyo GUC offers a variety of freely selectable courses in-person and online with cutting-edge contents, taught by leading faculty members of the University of Tokyo.

Overview of Go Global Gateway (GGG)

Q

I heard that all undergraduate students participate in the Go Global Gateway (GGG) program. When should I start?

A

You can begin the GGG program at any time during your undergraduate studies. This course is designed to help you understand and stay motivated for the various international activities and programs offered by UTokyo. We recommend starting with the on-demand course as early as your first year! Completion of the course is a prerequisite for participating in many events, such as the “GO GLOBAL Study Abroad Fair” and University-wide Student Exchange Program (USTEP).

What are the requirements for the GGG certificate?

A

To apply for the GGG certificate, you need to take the on-demand course, fulfill the “foreign language” requirement (which is part of the requirements for the Junior Division), and either take “courses taught in a language other than your first language” or participate in a “global experience,” such as short-term study abroad programs.

What is GGG+ (Plus)?

A

GGG+ (Plus) is awarded to those who complete the Global Leadership Program-I (GLP-I) or the Global Leadership Program-II (Trilingual Program) (GLP-II (TLP)), along with the on-demand online course. GLP-I, conducted primarily in English, is a program designed to cultivate leadership skills for active participation in international society. GLP-II (TLP) aims to cultivate advanced skills in an additional language, alongside Japanese and English, as well as broad cultural understanding necessary for being an active member of the international community.

What are the incentives for obtaining the GGG certificate?

GGG is designed to encourage all undergraduate students to develop and enhance their “global competence”—the ability to live and work together with diverse people around the world. The GGG certificate not only visualizes the international activities you engaged in during your student life, but also serves as recognition of your foundational global competence.

A

It is an introductory course designed to help you gain a basic understanding of international activities and academic programs offered at UTokyo. The course consists of videos totaling approximately 70 minutes, covering an overview of UTokyo’s international programs, application procedures, and important notes for study abroad. After watching each video, you will need to take the quizzes and submit your answers to complete the course. Both the videos and the quizzes are accessible through a single online form. The total time required to complete the course is approximately 90-105 minutes, equivalent to one university class session.

A

If Japanese is your first language, classes conducted in languages other than Japanese (*) count towards the requirement. (*For example, the Global Liberal Arts courses and Language-Global Liberal Arts courses (in English, Chinese, German, French, Russian, Korean, and Spanish) offered by GlobE are available.) Please note that courses classified as “② Foreign Language Courses” (i.e., Foundation Courses and Integrated Courses (Group L)) are not applicable to the category of “③ Courses offered in a language other than your first language.”

[③Courses offered in languages other than your first language] What does the "first language" refer to?

[③Courses offered in languages other than your first language] My first language is Japanese. If I take a course where we read literature/texts written in another language, does it count toward Category ③?

A

Category ③ is intended for courses where the medium of instruction is a language other than your first language. Therefore, a course will qualify if the language used for instruction (e.g., the instructor’s explanations) is a language other than Japanese. However, if the majority of the course is conducted in your first language—for example, if the instructor explains the material in Japanese—it does not qualify for Category ③.

A

Some programs organized by UTokyo may be considered Global Experiences for GGG, even if they are held in Japan. For example, certain domestic programs offered by GlobE–such as short-term inbound programs for students from overseas institutions in which UTokyo students can participate–are applicable to this category. [④Global Experiences] Do activities conducted before entering the university count?

Is it necessary to obtain the GGG certificate separately in order to obtain the GGG+ certificate? Can I receive both the GGG and GGG+ certificates?

A

The GGG+ certificate is awarded upon completing the on-demand online course and the Global Leadership Program-I (GLP-I) and/or the Global Leadership Program-II (Trilingual Program) (GLP-II (TLP)) without requiring a separate application for the GGG certification.
It is possible to receive both the GGG and GGG+ certificates. In order to obtain the GGG certificate, you will need to apply through the designated form.

Does completing the Global Leadership Program-I (GLP-I) or the Global Leadership Program-II (Trilingual Program) (GLP-II (TLP)) automatically grant me the GGG+ (Plus) certificate?

When can I apply for the GGG certificate?

A

You can apply for the GGG certificate once you have completed the following three requirements: ① the on-demand online course (including confirmation quizzes), ② “Foreign Language Courses,” and ③a course offered in a language other than your first language and/or ④ participation in Global Experiences.

I am currently a first-year student in the Junior Division of the College of Arts and Sciences and still taking foreign language courses. Can I apply for the certificate now?

To those who enrolled in or before AY 2024

Q

I entered the university in AY 2024. Am I eligible to participate in the Go Global Gateway program?

Q

I have already obtained GGG certificate in AY 2024. Am I eligible to participate in the GGG program again?

A

Those who have already obtained the GGG certificate in or before AY 2024 can also re-participate in the GGG program. However, please note that the certificate can be awarded only once during your enrollment at the university. You can certainly participate in and earn the certificate for GGG+ (Plus), and we strongly encourage you to do so.
