学歴
Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Information Studies, The University of Tokyo (Field of Specialization: Visual Anthropology, Ethnographic Filmmaking, Migration and Globalization)
プロフィール
I grew up in a rural village in Nepal that spans the base of the Himalayas. The settlers in my hometown belong to different castes and ethnic groups. My life experiences within these boundaries of caste and ethnic groups have taught me about several aspects of society.
During my bachelor's degree in environmental science, I studied global warming, climate change, and significant challenges related to global environmental transformations. While pursuing my master’s degree in the Visual Cultural Studies Program at UiT in Norway (2004-2006), I gained in-depth knowledge of anthropological theories and methods, which allowed me to explore the complexities and nuances of human interactions and socio-cultural understanding. The training in visual anthropology equipped me with essential skills to conduct visual ethnographic fieldwork, analyze ethnographic audiovisual data, and produce films and texts as research outcomes.
My Ph.D. studies at the University of Tokyo further advanced my expertise in anthropological and visual ethnographic methods, particularly in understanding political, economic, and socio-cultural globalization worldwide. By combining the art and skill of filmmaking, a new way of applying multiple media forms in research, and my training as an ethnographer, I further enhanced my knowledge of ethnographic filmmaking and visual and multimodal anthropology.
My academic accomplishments include being awarded the prestigious Fejos Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ethnographic Film at the Wenner-Gren Foundation USA in 2018, as well as the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship at Sophia University. Since 2017, I have been teaching visual anthropology, digital ethnography, and ethnographic filmmaking at the University of Tokyo for both graduate and undergraduate students. Part of my research achievements has also been featured on the UTokyo webpage. https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/focus/en/features/z1304_00048.html
