On Friday, October 4 at 18:00, as Dialogue at UTokyo GlobE #10, a talk event with Dr. Cynthia M. Friend (President and CEO of The Kavli Foundation, T.W. Richards Professor of Chemistry Emerita at Harvard University), Prof. Kaori Hayashi (Executive Vice President of UTokyo) and Prof. Mio Murao (Professor at Graduate School of Science) was held.In the first half of the event, Dr. Friend, who was born and raised in a small town with a population of less than 300, gave a lecture (titled “Charting Your Journey in the Scientific World”) about her unique journey as the first woman to become a professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University. She encouraged the younger generation to be ambitious, with messages such as that success is possible no matter what background one comes from, and that it is important to work with a team and learn that "you're not doing it alone" to achieve goals.
In the latter half of the event, Dr. Friend, Prof. Kaori Hayashi (Executive Vice President of UTokyo) and Prof. Mio Murao (Professor at Graduate School of Science), held a discussion and, a Q&A session with approximately 80 UTokyo students followed. They enthusiastically answered a wide range of questions, from the concept of life-work balance as a researcher and the way to maintain motivation for research to their views on the future development of science.
