Koto Workshop Held with Princeton and UTokyo Students!
2025.07.07
Students from Princeton University and the University of Tokyo took part in a Koto music workshop as part of their ongoing interactive session July 1, 2025.We were honored to welcome two distinguished instructors: Ms. Yasuko Sato, a UTokyo alumna and professional Koto performer and composer, and Mr. Ouchi Kadowaki, a shakuhachi (bamboo flute) player. Under the theme of "ma" (the Japanese concept of space and timing), the session began with an engaging introduction to the history and cultural significance of the Koto, a traditional Japanese instrument with 13 strings and over a thousand years of history.
Ms. Sato shared insights into how the Koto has been present in Japanese life since ancient times, referring to early clay figures (haniwa), as well as historical texts such as the Kojiki and The Tale of Genji, and discussed a uniquely Japanese spirit about sound. Students also had the rare opportunity to examine valuable historical sheet music and traditional performance tools, which sparked lively interest from both Princeton and UTokyo participants.
During the hands-on experience, students had the opportunity to play the Koto themselves. Students asked many questions about tuning and how the music is structured, showing their keen increasing interest and appreciation for traditional Japanese instruments. The music performance section featured the beloved New Year classic "Haru no Umi" (The Sea in Spring), followed by an original composition by Ms. Sato performed on the 25-string Koto — a modern version of the traditional instrument. The workshop concluded with a group performance of the well-known piece "Sakura," creating a moment of shared joy and connection through music. Smiles and a sense of unity filled the room as students played their first notes together.
The Student Plaza at the Center for Global Education became a cozy and inviting place filled with the spirit of Wa — the essence of harmony and Japanese tradition — creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
