On Friday, June 20, Center for Global Education (Komaba Branch) joined the "Discover KABUKI" event hosted by the Japan Arts Council. Throughout the event, international students and foreign researchers had the opportunity to not only experience Japanese culture but also interact with other UTokyo participants. Fifty-seven participants from twenty countries/regions enjoyed the performance together. The program began with a guidance session titled "How to appreciate KABUKI," which gave a preview of the day's performance and highlights. The main program was the performance of "Tsuchiya Chikara," which depicts a famous historical event involving the Ako retainers in the winter of 1703. Participants were fascinated by the subtle drama of the protagonist and those around him exchanging haikai (poem) while concealing their inner turmoil.
More than 96% of the survey respondents indicated that they gained a deeper understanding of Kabuki through the event, and nearly 84% said that it helped them connect with other UTokyo participants.
