2025.06.03
On Thursday, May 29, 2025, GlobE hosted the 15th installment of its “Dialogue at UTokyo GlobE” series, featuring a special talk by Ms. Melissa Fleming, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications. She was joined by UTokyo President Teruo Fujii and Executive Vice President Kaori Hayashi for an engaging and thought-provoking event.

The first half of the event featured a keynote lecture by Ms. Fleming titled “Communicating Climate Change in an Age of Disinformation.” Drawing on examples from Japan, she highlighted the dangers of climate misinformation and stressed the importance of seeking out accurate, science-based knowledge. Her powerful message—that informed understanding and action are vital to safeguarding our planet’s future—resonated deeply with the audience.

In the second half, Ms. Fleming engaged in a dynamic discussion with President Fujii and Executive Vice President Hayashi. The conversation explored how to bridge the gap between political strategies and everyday actions in the fight against climate change. They also examined the critical role universities can play and the potential of younger generations to drive meaningful change.

Students actively participated in the dialogue, raising insightful questions such as how young people can contribute to climate action amid a declining population, and what steps they can take to make a difference. Through this exchange, the event reaffirmed the power of individual action and the significance of daily efforts in addressing the climate crisis. It served as a valuable opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding and commitment to climate issues.
