Film Night: “THE MAKING OF A JAPANESE”（directed by Ema Ryan Yamazaki）Film Screening & Discussion held at UTokyo GlobE

On Wednesday, November 27, we held a film screening and discussion event to provide students with an opportunity to explore different cultures and values.

We invited Ema Ryan Yamazaki, who directed “THE MAKING OF A JAPANESE”, a documentary on the daily life of a Japanese elementary school. The documentary highlights the unique aspects of the Japanese education and way of cultivating social values.

The screening was followed by lively discussion and Q&A sessions with Ema. She kindly responded to many questions, ranging from the significance of Japanese school discipline, absenteeism (futōkō), and filming techniques.

Participants were able to gain a better understanding of Japanese elementary school education and culture, as they also reflected on their own experiences from their childhood.
