Biography
I was born and have lived mostly in Tokyo. Until March 2022, I taught courses on literature and culture in English-speaking countries and areas as part of the British Studies Section of the Department of Area Studies at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. I also taught English to first- and second-year students and engaged in curriculum design and reform in collaboration with my colleagues on Komaba Campus. My research focuses on the postcolonial implications of writing poetry in English within bilingual cultural and social contexts shaped by the British colonial rule, where indigenous languages coexist with English. I primarily study poets from Ireland, Scotland, and Aotearoa New Zealand. My publications include Eigoken no Gendaishi wo Yomu [Reading Contemporary Poetry in English] (2017), Bungakutoshi Dublin [Dublin, City of Literature] (co-authored, 2017), Writing at the Edge of the Universe (co-authored, 2004) among others. https://researchmap.jp/m_nakao
Message to Students
In an era marked by rapid changes and uncertainty, what can we and should we do as global citizens? The university is an ideal place to deeply reflect on these questions. Meeting students from diverse cultural backgrounds, thinking together, engaging in dialogue, and striving to be good neighbours to one another is a rewarding experience. To provide such opportunities, the GlobE offers a variety of programs, and we encourage you to take full advantage of them.
