University-wide Student Exchange Program(USTEP)orientation and welcome event 2026 Spring

2026.04.20

On April 3, an orientation and welcome event for newly admitted students of the University-wide Student Exchange Program (USTEP) took place at the iconic Yasuda Auditorium. This April, 98 outstanding undergraduate students from partner universities around the world arrived in Tokyo to begin their USTEP Type U exchange at the University of Tokyo. These students are now attending classes at both the Hongo and Komaba campuses.

The orientation program featured an introduction to faculty members affiliated with GlobE (the Center for Global Education), offering students a valuable opportunity to connect with those who will support them throughout their academic journey in Japan. Also, in attendance were UTokyo students serving as 'USTEP Partners', a student-led initiative launched in 2023 to encourage international exchange and peer support. Now in its sixth term, the USTEP Partners program brings together small groups of exchange and local students who engage in various intercultural activities throughout the semester.

The second part of the welcome event was led by the organizing members of the USTEP Partners, who delivered engaging presentations introducing student life at the University of Tokyo and many attractions of Japan. A special highlight was the return of a former USTEP participant, now a graduate student at UTokyo, who shared warm messages and practical advice based on their own exchange experience. With favorable weather and lively atmosphere throughout the day, the event offered a warm and welcoming start of a semester filled with conversation, laughter, and new connections.

A warm welcome to all new USTEP students from our partner institutions—wishing you a meaningful and memorable semester at UTokyo.
