On Thursday, November 6, 2025, an event introducing traditional Japanese music titled “An Evening of Sankyoku” was held in the Building 18 Hall on the Komaba Campus. It was hosted by the Center for Global Education (Komaba Branch) together with the Association for International Exchange of Japanese Music, the Globalization Office, and the Global Studies Program Committee.

The term sankyoku refers to the koto (Japanese zither), shamisen (three-string plucked banjo-like instrument), and shakuhachi (vertical bamboo flute), as well as to the music performed on these three instruments.

The event began with an introduction to sankyoku, followed by the performers sharing insights into each instrument’s history, structure, and performance techniques and then by live performances that captivated the audience. A total of 110 participants from 31 countries and regions attended, treasuring this rare opportunity to learn about traditional Japanese music.

Comments from participants included “It was stunning and enlightening,” “The performance of the artists was amazing! You could tell how skilled and professional they are.
