Biography
As a critical sociolinguist, I study the intersections of language, education, and migration. Using ethnographic and discourse analytic methods, my dissertation examined the gendered paradox faced by middle-class Asian women who enroll in Korean language institutes in Seoul as part of their transnational migration trajectories. In a parallel project, drawing on my personal experience as a survivor-advocate, I investigate the role of language and multilingualism in grassroots activism against gender-based violence.
          Message to Students
We all carry multiple voices within us, more than just the languages we can name (like “Japanese,” “English,” or “Korean”). Through our classes and conversations, I hope we can discover and cultivate the many different ways we speak and connect with one another.
