About the lecturer
| Dr Sho Shimoyamada specialises in the interdisciplinary field of leisure and tourism studies. Their research portfolio includes overtourism and undertourism, risk sciences, the “touristification” of private spaces, posthumanism, and reciprocal altruism. Their doctoral research, conducted at the University of Edinburgh, explored the management of Scottish Open Gardens (private gardens open to the public for charity), with a particular focus on the power dynamics between human and non-human actors. Since joining the University of Tokyo as a postdoctoral researcher, Dr Shimoyamada has focussed on various formats of global education, specifically short-term intercultural collaborative learning outside the traditional classroom setting. They currently conduct two English-medium courses: ‘Introduction to Sustainable Tourism’ and ‘Tourism and Justice’, both of which serve as fora for students from diverse international backgrounds to exchange perspectives. |
